Rare Fossilised Crocodile Scute – Jurassic Osteoderm – Yorkshire Coast

A rare fossilised crocodile scute, preserved on top of a limestone nodule from the Jurassic rocks of the Yorkshire Coast.

Scutes are the bony plates, or osteoderms, that formed part of a crocodile's protective armour, sitting beneath the skin along the back and body. This specimen shows the distinctive pattern of individual bony plates preserved together.

The original limestone nodule has been cut down into a neat square shape, creating a clean display piece while leaving the scute preserved on its natural matrix.

A fantastic Jurassic crocodile fossil from Yorkshire, and an unusual piece for any collection of prehistoric marine reptiles.
